I CLOSED MY eyes. “How much did you hear?”
Silence greeted me.
“Awesome.”
I turned my head and stared into the flames. Orange on top, blue near the grate. Hot and hotter.
Just like me. Or at least my situation.
“Henry asked you to marry him?”
“You heard that much of the conversation and that’s what you want to ask?”
“What was your answer?”
Bad to worse.
I shoved myself to sitting, ignoring the bite of pain as I did so. “No. Of course it was no.”
“Thank God.”
“Wh-what?”
But Justin’s hands made the answer to that startled question seem very unimportant. He gripped my legs, spreading them as he crawled right into my space.
His face was level with mine. His eyes blazed with liquid intensity.
“I don’t understand you,” I whispered.
“Fuck if I understand myself.”
His lips took mine. They weren’t gentle or exploratory. This wasn’t a teasing kiss. This was want. Need.
Somehow I was flat on my back with Justin above me, our hips aligned exactly right, putting pressure just where I needed it.
And friction.
Let me tell you a thing about friction.
Too much equals bad.
Justin knew how to do it just right.
He’d propped himself up on one arm, presumably in deference to my ribs. But I wasn’t feeling my ribs. I was feeling his body against mine, hard muscles under my palms, his erection grinding into me and sending my arousal into astronomical levels.
Never had I wanted a man to take advantage of me more.
Except even as I had that thought, Justin pulled back. He knelt between my spread legs, expression molten, chest rising and falling like a horse after a long, hard gallop.
Come have a ride with me, I wanted to say. Desperately.
The words stayed firmly lodged in my throat. But definitely not my mind.
Some of the mental statement must have run across my eyes because Justin cursed and flopped over to his back. “Don’t look at me like that. I’m trying to not be an insensitive asshole, here.”
I didn’t reply. I couldn’t reply.
Insensitive or not, complicated or not, I wanted Justin more than I’d wanted anyone in my life, Rex included.
“I know all about distance.”
I snorted. “Now we’re going to talk?”
He propped himself up on one elbow and bent to take my lips in a sizzling kiss that had my head spinning. When he pulled back, I had to actually unclench my fingers from his hair so I didn’t rip it from his scalp.
“Yes, talk,” he said, nuzzling my neck. He hadn’t shaved, and the bristles from his stubble rubbed against my throat. If only he’d rub it somewhere else. Lower. “Because if we don’t talk then I’m going to forget that you were kicked in the ribs by a horse barely more than twenty-four hours ago. I’m going to forget you slept with my brother and you’re carrying his baby.”
He slid his fingers into my hair, tilted my head back, and kissed me again. “All of the reasons to leave you be are going to disappear, and you’ll be naked and beneath me.”
My heart was pounding, my skin stretched taut with arousal.
